Upon the outbreak of a violent sandstorm on Mars, the crew of NASA's Ares 3 mission is forced to abandon base and leave to return to Earth, but astronaut Mark Watney is struck by some of the storm debris, remains separated from the team, is left for dead and abandoned on the planet.
Mark, an engineer and botanist, manages to survive and repair the Rover by contacting Nasa by communicating through signs.
